The Meliorist – Altaab Khan

From flipping burgers in Fiji and Hawaii to being the Director of Learning and Development for Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, the journey has been one of self-development and passion for Mr Altaab Khan.

A self-described meliorist for human development is a firm believer in the process of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change and adapt as a result of learning and experiences, and continues to adhere to this personal mantra every day. As mentioned before, he started out in the hospitality industry as a line cook in McDonalds and through sheer tenacity and passion he has transformed into a top-of-the-line Skills Development trainer based in Fiji.

How about that for an amazing backstory!

He is a specialist in creating systematic training departments while also focusing on soft skills such as communication, people skills, and emotional intelligence. He also provides mentoring, leadership coaching, counseling, and personal brand development. He runs a private training consultancy post-covid where you can benefit from his extensive knowledge in one-on-one sessions as well as bringing him over to help with your organization.

He encourages aspirants of this profession to develop skills that would serve them well besides getting the formal education required to enter. These soft skills include   being resilient, having emotional intelligence, self-awareness, emotional agility, having a willingness to multi-skill, as well as maintaining good mental and emotional health. He also believes that having great support systems in the universities that provide guidance to careers as well as industry insights would help students be better prepared for this profession.

I would like to mention here that his advice in creating this set of soft skills is definitely worth taking into consideration. There is a lot that a person can learn in the classroom about becoming a business leader but taking steps to develop the above skills is what distinguishes amazing leaders from mediocre ones. It cannot be emphasized enough how resilience and emotional agility is to being an entrepreneur!

What’s in store for Altaab?

“I am grooming myself to be a future Cognitive Behavioural Therapist”

Now is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) related to HR? The answer to this question is a resounding YES! DEFINITELY!

Ask any HR professional who interacts regularly with the workforce and they will tell you that the majority of their time is spent ensuring the well-being of the employees are being taken care of. This would include ensuring that they (employees) are motivated to do their best which would include checking up on their emotional and mental health. Now where a HR specialist may not have the expertise to handle issues such as depression and marital problems, CBT professionals are fully equipped in this area and provide timely, and sometimes life-saving, advice.

When I asked him what were some things that he wished he had known before entering the field of HR he mentioned that it would have been to learn about psychology and particularly its usage in learning and development.

In countries that have spent years perfecting the craft of creating and maintaining successful industrial systems, the cross-over between psychology and business dates back to the 1900s in the United States. It was used extensively in the United States military during the Great War (WW1) and World War Two (WW2) where tests were used to identify the correct personnel for strategic roles. The evolution of the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology has been linear to the success of the American business environment and is something that we, in the South Pacific, must begin to utilize to be more competitive with the world.

This feature has been an exciting one being that it is the very first of its kind and because Altaab provides a comprehensive example of the mentality that we, as people leaders, need to maintain throughout our professional lives.

Having the audacity to stay ahead of the learning curve while having the emotional and psychological flexibility to adapt to change. The foresight to understand the ever-changing business environment and anticipate the skills that would be in demand in the future.

An advocate for continuous self-improvement that has dedicated his life to

There couldn’t have been a better person to begin this journey with than Altaab Khan.

The Meliorist of Human Development.

Success! You're on the list.
